Getting the Help You Need
The Social Security Disability program provides benefits to persons who due to severe disabilities, are prevented from getting or maintaining a job. If you find yourself in this position, you will need to file for Social Security Disability in Michigan.
You can file in person at a local Social Security Administration (SSA) field office, call or apply online. Applying for benefits requires that you have a large amount of information on hand. When you file, be sure to have at your disposal; your doctors’ contact information, treatments you have had due to the injury, conditions you are currently facing, past employment and earnings. By visiting a local field office you may be more comfortable in addition to having the assistance of an SSA field representative being present as you fill out your application for benefits. In Michigan there are 50 Social Security Administration offices available to assist you located throughout the state.

Even though you may choose to fill out your disability application online, you will still likely want to contact your local office to talk to an SSA claims rep as well.
After completing these steps with your local SSA, your paperwork will be sent to the DDS or the State Disability Determination Services (DDS) agency who will ultimately decide whether you will or will not receive benefits according to federal law.
Your claim may go on for months before it is complete and many will have to file an appeal however, it is important to know that you are not alone. If your claim is denied, you are entitled to reconsideration, a hearing and even a federal court case if necessary.
