Take the Pool Safety Pledge This Summer

Jun 23, 2014 | General

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently released a press release encouraging Americans to take a pledge to be safe around pools this summer. This comes in the wake of the numbers released for 2013 in regard to drowning in pools and spas across the country. According to the latest reports from the USA Swimming Foundation, from Memorial Day through Labor Day in 2013, at least 202 children between the ages of 1 and 14 drowned in a pool or spa in the U.S. and of these, 143 were children younger than 5. Further research by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reiterated the point that those younger children and toddlers are particularly vulnerable to drowning. In fact, statistics show that drowning is the leading cause for death among children between 1 and 4 and the second leading cause of death for children between 5 and 14 years of age.

Pools are a great way to enjoy the summer weather, which in Michigan can be all too fleeting however, with that being said, it is our job to ensure that our families are safe this summer. To help American’s do their part to protect their families around pools and spas this summer and reduce the number of children’s deaths due to accidental drown, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) launched its Pool Safety Campaign. Reinforcing the safety steps we can take to protect our families including being alert and fencing pools as well as teaching children to swim, the campaign encourages both parents and children to take a pledge for pool safety in 2014.

The Adult Pledge  – encourages you as an adult to:

  1. Designate a water watcher EVERY single time a child is near the water
  2. Teach kids to swim
  3. Learn CPR
  4. Remove pool ladders when not in use
  5. Ensure a permanent pool is always fenced properly.

The Kid Pledge  – encourages your child to never swim alone, learn to swim, stay away from drains and always be safe when swimming.

By encouraging your child to be safe and taking the pledge together, you can help prevent your own unfortunate pool or hot tub accidents and reduce the number of children who will die this summer due to drowning.
